Hira

Capital of the Lakhmids (q.v.), who, before their conquest by the Arabs (q.v.) in 633, formed a powerful Arab state to the south of Babylon. The Lakhmids were allied with Persia (q.v.) while their rival Ghassanids (q.v.) were allied with Byzantium (q.v.). Hira had a large Nestorian (q.v.) community.
